Residential activities are fun – Brownies and Leaders consistently rate them among the best things about guiding. They offer opportunities not only for learning and having fun, but also for developing skills like teamwork, leadership and independent living. Leaders are able to get to know the girls in their unit better, in a pleasant environment and over a period of time.
Originally Brownie units went to outdoor camps like their older sisters, but many people felt that Brownies were too young to cope successfully with outdoor life. In 1922 it was suggested that Brownie units had holidays in furnished houses instead of camping. Brownie holidays caught on quickly; girls everywhere delighted in the fun and challenge of living together as a family, playing and working without time restrictions and getting to know each other better.
Today’s Brownies can experience many different types of residential event and venue, including camping – overnight or for a longer period of time.

We enjoyed a Harry Potter themed holiday at The Earth House, Northern Heights near Borehamwood. The sixes were Gryffindor, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. The leaders were Professor McGonagal (Jenni), Madam Pomfrey (Jan), Professor Sprout (Maria), Luna Lovegood (Amy), Fred Weasley (Charis) and George Weasley (Bronte). The Brownies started their time at Hogwarts by letting the sorting hat decide which six they would be in. The Quidditch house cup was fiercely contested, with Ravenclaw being the winners. Brownies completed the lessons of Hogwarts, including defence against the dark arts, study of ancient runes and care of magical creatures during a wide game. Butterbeer ice cream was made by the Brownies and thoroughly enjoyed. Crafts included designing wands and wand boxes, making and filling potion bottles and creating golden snitches.
1st Little Paxton Brownies went to Macqueen House in Twywell, Northamptonshire for a Mystery themed holiday. The sixes were Super Spies, Secret Agents and Codebreakers and the leaders were James Bond (Jenni), Inspector Gadget (Jan), Daphne (from Scooby Doo) (Maria), Miss Scarlett (Amy), Sherlock Holmes (Charis) and Nancy Drew (Bronte). Over 4 days, the Brownies completed challenges and activties to gain clues to who stole Captain Smith's missing treasure. The Brownies took part in spy and detective themed activties (including finger printing, code breaking and invisible writing), went geocaching, took part in a wide game, made magnifying glass biscuits, had a treasure hunt and recovered the missing gems. The Brownies were "snap-happy" with a photo booth to try out disguises during free time. We also enjoyed a campfire and a bingo evening. By the end of the holiday all the Brownies had earned their Top Secret Challenge badge.
10 Brownies, Jenni & Amy went to PGL Caythorpe Court during the Easter holidays for 4 days of adventurous activities. The activities were Climbing, Tunnel Trail, Quad Biking, Giant Swing, Vertical Challenge, Zip Wire, Raft Building, Challenge Course, High Ropes, Problem Solving, All Aboard and Sensory Trail. Our evening activities were Robot Wars, Campfire and Photo Challenge.
We stayed at the Cottered Guide Centre near Baldock for an Disney themed Brownie holiday. The sixes were Olafs, Tiggers and 101 Dalmatians. The leaders were Tinkerbell (Jenni), Fairy Godmother (Jan), Remy (Maria) and Minnie Mouse (Amy). Our Guide Helpers were Bambi (Charis) and Dumbo (Bronte). We made cushions out of Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse fleece, created Winnie the Pooh decoupage cards, and made our own Disney Princess outfits. We went on a village trail in the rain and played on the play equipment. We decorated biscuits as our Six characters and had a Disney quiz night.
